What is Discography?

Discography is a diagnostic procedure used to identify the source of chronic back pain or neck pain. This procedure involves injecting contrast dye into one or more spinal discs to determine if they are the cause of the pain. Discography helps physicians pinpoint the exact location of damaged or degenerated discs.

Conditions Treated

  • Herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Discogenic pain
  • Persistent back or neck pain
  • Spinal trauma

How Does the Procedure Work?

During the procedure, contrast dye is injected into the center of the spinal discs under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance. If a disc is the source of pain, the injection will reproduce the patient’s symptoms. The dye also helps visualize any structural abnormalities on imaging tests.

What to Expect

  1. Pre-Procedure Preparation: Patients may be asked to stop certain medications and avoid eating or drinking for a few hours before the procedure.
  2. Procedure: The patient lies on their stomach, and the targeted area is cleaned and numbed. Using fluoroscopic guidance, the physician inserts a thin needle into the disc and injects contrast dye.
  3. Post-Procedure Care: Patients may experience temporary soreness at the injection site. Rest and light activity are recommended for 24-48 hours.

Benefits

  • Provides accurate diagnosis of disc-related pain
  • Helps guide further treatment options
  • Minimally invasive procedure
  • Quick recovery time

Risks and Side Effects

Though rare, possible risks include:

  • Temporary soreness at the injection site
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Nerve damage (very rare)
  • Disc injury
  • Headache
